Clothes Dryers: Gas vs Electric
By ProMatcher Staff
There are two basic types of dryers: gas and electric.
Gas Clothes Dryers
Gas clothes dryers are typically more expensive to purchase. However, they are more energy efficient and have shorter drying times than their electric counterparts. Gas dryers are typically less expensive to operate and maintain on a year-to-year basis, but you should investigate the cost of natural gas in your area before making any purchase. All gas dryers require both an electrical outlet (usually 220v), a dedicated gas line, and ventilation to an outdoor area.
Comparison summary:
Plus Factor - More energy efficient Plus Factor - Dries clothes faster Plus Factor - $ - Less expensive to operate (typically) Minus Factor - $$ - More expensive to purchase Minus Factor - Requires both electric plug and access to gas line.
Electric Clothes Dryers
Electric clothes dryers are somewhat more affordable but have higher operating costs on a month-to-month basis. Drying times are slightly longer, but if installing a gas line in your home is not possible, an electric dryer is a convenient alternative.
