Dishwasher Tubs: Plastic vs Stainless Steel

There are two main types of dishwasher tubs: plastic and stainless steel.

Plastic Dishwasher Tubs
Plastic dishwashers are less expensive than stainless steel. Dishwashers with plastic tubs are durable, but cannot withstand the same high temperatures that stainless steel can. They are typically louder and less energy efficient than stainless steel tubs. The lighter colors may become slightly discolored over time, but black or other dark colors will hide age better.

Comparison summary:

Plus Factor - $ - Less expensive to purchase
Minus Factor - Less durable
Minus Factor - Louder
Minus Factor - Can develop odors
Minus Factor - Can discolor if they are a light color
Minus Factor - Does not retain heat as well as steel
Minus Factor - $$ - Less energy efficient (more expensive to operate)

Stainless Steel Dishwasher Tubs

Stainless steel dishwashers are more more durable, but they come with a higher price tag. They typically use less water and power and are better at reducing noise than plastic tubs. They also retain heat better than plastic (which dries dishes faster).

Comparison summary:

Plus Factor - More durable than other metals
Plus Factor - Quieter
Plus Factor - $ - More energy efficient (less expensive to operate)
Plus Factor - Retains heat better than plastic
Plus Factor - Easy to clean and retains color
Minus Factor - $$ - More expensive to purchase
